For me it all started with two cassette tapes that I only listened too because this stupd boy I liked was pushing them on me like a crack dealer... that's the right analogy for me because. My reaction was no less than addiction.
It didn't come right away, I liked the tapes but wouldn't profess love for the band until id seen them live a couple of times. A couple of shows quickly turned into more shows than I could count. Soon I was seeing them almost weekly. ANd eventually id even book them 4 my own show.
THE GREAT DIVIDE changed my musical direction 180 degrees. My love of all things texas and all things texas music related all started with this band from oklahoma!
To me jason boland and cross canadian were bands I had to listen to in order to hear my band as almost every show was opened by 1 or the other. I grew to love these guys too over time. The same can be said for stoney. I came to love susan gibson (of wide open spaces fame) long b4 WOS because the Groobees opened for TGD. I saw Gary P Nunn at a GD show before I knew he was the reason "you could go home with the armadillo" or even what the armadillo world headquarters was or meant. I saw Robert Earl Keen for the first time at a GD show and the only song I knew was the one TGD covered at every other show (road goes on forever).
I remember standing at their final show in stillwater completely in that moment. The breakup had been building and the vibe around it wasn't good. I was in denial about the whole thing and would shun the two bands that rose from the ashes for the next couple of years. Eventually id go back to mike as it was always his voice and soul in my favorite songs, but I would always miss that vibe that existed between those guys when it was really good.
To hear now that the guys have mended fences is great, but to hear them talk about reunion dates is awesome. I can't wait to stroll down memory lane with these guys....
